The expansion of the Intensive Care Unit at the Alentejo Coast Local Health Unit aimed to increase the number of negative pressure rooms. In order to do so, a volume was created on the buildings' roof, next to the current ICU, with four new rooms and a nurses' station connecting both spaces. We opted for a light and quick construction system in a steel profile structure, applied over an existing slab, and an exterior lining made using fiber cement panels. The coating's plastic character seeks to differentiate the new volume from the existing building without breaking completely with its materiality.
